Description

In 1876 the Samurai were banned from the carrying of swords. This attempt to end a thousand year tradition was not received lightly by the proud warrior class and the "stick" katana was born. Innocuous walking canes now concealed the revered blades but the katana, the "Soul of the Samurai", lived on. Created by today's Oriental master smiths, the Bamboo Stick Katana is a superbly authentic Samurai piece, combining an artfully carved "Bamboo" scabbard and grip with a blade forged and tempered in the style of the Japanese masters. The junction of the grip and the scabbard is cleverly concealed at a "joint" in the "bamboo", incorporating a release catch in the traditional ladybug style. An equally traditional bamboo peg secures the tang to the grip. The razor-sharp blade is truly a masterpiece of the swordmaster's art, hand forged and using the traditional sculpted clay method of tempering to produce a genuine temper line in the o-midare style.(see pic below) The high edge hardness and resilient blade body produced by this technique embody the true secret of the Samurai sword and set the Bamboo Stick Katana apart from mass-produced toys. The Traditional Maintenence kit is Supplied.(SOH-1003-GT). The kit contains blade oil, rice papers, an oiling cloth, a powder ball for blade polishing and a brass awl and hammer. The kit is contained in a fitted wooden box and full maintenance and handling instructions are included. Hand crafted at the Dalian, Hanwei (China) forge by Paul Chen (ChenChao-po). Edge is Rockwell 60 Hardness (varies between 58-62). Back is Rockwell 40 Hardness (usually in high 30's). Hammer Forged o-midari style temper line. 10/95 Carbon Steel. Blade: 27-1/4". Handle: 11/5". Overall: 39.25". Weight 1lb 13 ounces. THIS IS NOT A MASS PRODUCED 440 STAINLESS DISPLAY TOY.
