Description

The Castle of Churburg has long been known as a repository for some of the finest and earliest armor in Europe. This stunning suit was worn by one of the Vogts of Matsch and dates from about 1390 AD. Located in the Southern Tyrol, Churburg guarded the Brenner Pass and gave access to Italy as well as the Adriatic Sea. The strategic location provided for great wealth, and also access to the armorers of both Italy and Germany. The inhabitants seemed to have been a quarrelsome bunch, thus needing the protection of a good suit of armor. This suit, which is well represented in many books on arms and armor is one of the oldest suits known. It consists of a pig faced basinet and a breastplate consisting of nine steel lames. The breastplate also has an attached, retractable lance rest, and is completed with a "lisieres d' arret," a triangular bar that deflects an opponent's lance or sword point away from the throat. The arms are protected by gauntlets and vambraces complete with elbow cops. The leg harness is complete. This armor is fully wearable and fully articulated, as evidenced in our photographs. (The individual wearing the suit is 6' 1" tall and weighs 210 lbs.) The chain mail and weapons shown do NOT come with this armor. A stand can be ordered separately. The armor is decorated with brass bands complete with the original latin inscriptions. It is difficult to show just how beautiful this suit is; our photographs just don't do it justice.
