Legend surrounds the origin of the sword in China. The first single-edged cutting sword, the dao, was supposedly made by melting gold by Sui Renshi, the second of the mythical San Huang emperors. In China, swords were either male, xiong, or female, ci. Swords were given names and some were said to have magic powers such as glowing in the dark or making sounds.
