Question by John: Preserving high carbon steel sword?
I have a medieval type sword that’s high carbon steel that I’d like to preserve so that it doesn’t rust, especially along the blade. I was wondering if there was a specific way I should do that. Would it be preferable to simply wipe down the blade with any kind’ve oil and just leave it at that? Or should it be wrapped in some kind’ve oiled cloth? I have no sheath to put it and it simply stays out, with the blade exposed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suppose it depends on if you are displaying it and how much time you want to spend on it. Oil will do if you want to display it and you can periodically replace the oil, since it will volatilize eventually. If you just want the best storage possible, you should exclude air. The military has a special kind of heavy grease for just that purpose, check it out. I would be sure to clean off any rust before the treatment, though, rust can form a corrosion cell that may continue to degrade the blade.
